Random Reads: "The Rivals" by Channing and Jones

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! It's been a while since we dug on some scary scans from Red Circle Sorcery, so let's dive into Sorcery #7 (May 1974)! "The Rivals" was written by Marvin Channing with art by Bruce Jones. Now Jones is best known as a writer, but dang! the man could draw with the best of 'em. Check it out!

  1. Those are horribly blurry scans! You can see the same story (and more by Bruce Jones from the same era) in much greater clarity here:

Page two, panel two has a "W" in the fence, and the opening panels bear the stamp of Berni Wrightson's inks. Page three is inked by Mike Kaluta, though there is no monograph evident.

Page four, panel two has a small "J." which indicates that Jeff Jones inked much of this page.

At Mr. Door Tree's site is a message from April Campbell-Jones (Bruce Jones' wife) which confirms these things.

    Enjoy!

    Chris A.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
